Reminiscent of Ruth Rendell, multiple award-winning author Deborah Crombie creates graceful mysteries, resonating with lyrical prose, elegant suspense, and finely-drawn characters. This is her darkly irresistible tale of friendship shattered by shocking betrayal, and repercussions that echo down through the years.

A stunningly beautiful young woman is found strangled in London's Mudchute Park, her clothing carefully arranged to preserve her modesty. With that unusual detail in mind, Detective Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and his partner Sergeant Gemma James suspect the crime was more than a simple assault gone awry. As they collect the strange facts surrounding her death, they discover the victim's life was a mystery even to those who knew her best.

Internationally-acclaimed author Deborah Crombie brilliantly weaves together events of World War II England with complex problems of present-day London. As British actor Jenny Sterlin's superb dramatization unfolds, you'll understand why this crime novel is as at home on the bookshelf with literary novels as it is with the most baffling whodunit.

Kissed a Sad Goodbye A Duncan Kincaid/Jemma James Novel (Audible Audio Edition) Deborah Crombie Jenny Sterlin Recorded Books Books

This novel was not as good a read for me as all of the other Duncan Kincaid / Gemma James series books I have read, about 6 or 7 now. The characters are not as interesting as others to which I've been introduced in the series, and the state of the Kincaid & James relationship is not as interesting here, except for Kincaid's struggle to connect with the son he just discovered in the prior, excellently plotted book. The long flashbacks about one of the key characters were intrusive and too lengthy. A plus for the book is the intersting setting in and around the Isle of Dogs and Greenwich. The map on the inside covers of the hardbound (absent in the Kindle edition, alas, is a further treat. Don't let my review discourage you from trying other books in this excellent series in Kindle or book form. If you choose the Kindle, please see if you can get the hardbound out of your library (or buy it if so inclined) to see the included, wonderful map of the London area of the scene of this mystery.

Kissed a Sad Goodbye A Duncan Kincaid/Jemma James Novel (Audible Audio Edition) Deborah Crombie Jenny Sterlin Recorded Books Books Reviews

Ever since the quality of Elizabeth George's books took a nosedive, I've been searching for another favorite mystery author. I've found her. And interestingly, like Ms. George, Deborah Crombie is an American woman who sets her mysteries in England.

The book has three threads one is the ongoing romantic relationship between Superintendent Kincaid and his partner, Gemma James. A second is the mystery itself, involving a beautiful woman whose body is found carefully laid out in a park. The third is the genesis of the relationship among some of the characters/suspects and their families, a relationship which began back when English children were transported to the countryside to spare them the horrors of the World War II Blitz.

All three themes are handled beautifully. The characters of Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James continue to develop believably throughout this series. (This is, I believe, the sixth Kincaid/James book). The real-life problems and uncertainties they encounter while trying to maintain their family and professional obligations, and leave time for themselves and each other, will strike a believable chord with anyone old enough to have gone through this phase of life. The mystery is complex and unpredictable enough to be challenging but not confusing. The ending is beautiful - it settles both the mystery and the unresolved pain from the events of the 1940's.

If you haven't discovered the Crombie/Kincaid/James series yet, I recommend starting with the first one, "A Share in Death," which was nominated for an Agatha as best first novel of 1993. But I've read all of the first six, and they're all excellent.
One of my favorite authors is Louise Penney and on her website she indicated that she was inspired by Deborah Crombie, so I decided to give this author a read. When I discovered that she had completed a number of books in the series, I decided to start at the beginning. This is book six and it is the best so far. This author is very skilled at allowing you, the reader, to really get to know her characters and very adept at interwining several story lines that are all interconnected in some way. In this book she does an excellent job of weaving the historical impact of WWII on the people living in the Isle of Dogs in London, especially the children and, as well as the long term impact which is the focus of the book. This is writing at it's finest and I highly recommend this book. However to really fully grasp the depth of the relationship between Duncan and Gemma, I would recommend starting with the first book in the series. You will not be disappointed.
I find that I titled my review of another of Crombie's mysteries "complex and interesting." Some other reviewers complained there were too many characters and subplots in this book, but that is one thing I like about the Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James mysteries. I do agree with some reviewers who think maps would be a useful addition to these novels; I did have have trouble following some descriptions of movements through locations. But Crombie accomplished a lot in this book. In addition to the murder plot, the book includes some history of the Docklands area of London and the story of children evacuated to the countryside during WWII. Relationships of parents, especially fathers, to children are prominent in this novel. Several characters struggle to define themselves aside from their relationships to others. This novel allows the reader to view the ongoing struggle of Kincaid and James to solidify their relationship in the context of other romantic relationships that are violated, relinquished, or resurrected by other characters. As usual, Crombie creates vivid characters with personalities that come to be understood by the reader. I did not guess the perpetrator before the plot revealed the solution; I found each suspect considered by Kincaid and James plausible, and the solution plausible because of the author's excellent character development.
Another captivating Kincaid & James crime mystery. A brilliant intriguing complex series of plots indicative of Agatha Christie - Indeed I suspect that Ms Crombie had devoured all Agatha Christie's crime novels before she had entered her teens...she is a master (mistress?) of the complex plot....the Agatha Christie of the 21st century. The many characters in the book are given life by her ability to describe & paint personalities in a few well chosen words. Despite being a "crime novel" it is a surprising gentle book to read. No blood and gore (well not too much) which is too common with many of today's crime writers seeking the shock factor. Tying up all the lose ends in the last few pages makes for a very satisfying read and encourages the reader to look for the next book (7) in the series.
A slight amount of discord for this reader was the romantic folly which took Gemma at one stage - totally out of character but I guess this does happen in real life.
This novel was not as good a read for me as all of the other Duncan Kincaid / Gemma James series books I have read, about 6 or 7 now.
